En Afghanistan, según un reportaje de la CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/10/26/ctw.afghanistan.sex.trade/index.html), hay muchos niños adolescentes (en su mayoría entre 13 y 15 años), quienes son forzados a vestirse de mujeres, maquillarse, bailar danzas exóticas para un grupo de hombres influyentes, y luego son abusados sexualmente.
Esta práctica se llama "bacha bazi", o en inglés "boy play" y tiene muchos años de atiguedad. Aunque no es legal, pasa desapercibida ante los ojos de la sociedad ya que es opacada por tanta violencia, guerras y años de pobreza y conflictos en esta región. Asimismo, hay muchos niños que, al obtener su libertad, prefieren quedarse y seguir bailando para poder obtener dinero y mantener a sus familia. Según testimonios adquiridos por la CNN, estos jóvenes deciden quedarse porque es lo único que conocen en el mundo.
Muchos de los familiares de estos jóvenes, saben que esto está sucediendo, sin embargo no tienen el poder para pararlo ni pueden vivir sin el dinero que esto les da. También han habido casos en los que las autoridades no hacen nada al respecto ya que muchos de los niños terminan teniendo rasgos afeminados y en una sociedad extremadamente machista como la de Afghanistan, éstos son marginados.
Según otro reportaje de Digital Journal, Shir Mohammad era un niño de 14 años cuando fue violado por un poderoso magnate. El niño se acostumbró a este estilo de vida y siguió viviendo con él hasta los 24, edad en la que ya era muy grande para seguir bailando; para seguir siendo protegido por el magnate, una vez que él ya no lo quería para fines sexuales, Shir Mohammad pidió la autorización de su jefe para casarse con su hija. En el 2007 se casaron.
Muchos de estos niños aspiran a ser como sus jefes y algún día tener mucho dinero y poder tener sus propios niños que les bailen.
En Afghanistan esta practicas son percibidas por muchos como parte de la cultura. Hasta qué punto se debe tolerar dichas "prácticas culturales"? Cual es la línea divisoria entre lo permisible y lo inmoral?

In Afghanistan, according to CNN news, there are thousands of boys (between the ages of 13 and 15) who are forced to dress up like women, wear make-up, and perform exotic dances for a group of rich men. After that, they are sexually abused.
This practice is called "bacha bazi", or in English "boy play", and it has been going on for years. Even though it's not legal, it happens too often because people are too worried with "bigger" issues like violence, extreme poverty, wars and years of religious conflicts. Nevertheless, lots of boys, after they obtain their freedom, decide to keep dancing for money in order to be able to keep offering financial support to their families. According to testimonies given to the CNN, these young men decide to stay because they have been doing it for so long that that's the only reality they know.
Many of their families know about these reunions, however, they don't have the power to stop them nor the money to live without it. There are also cases in which the authorities don't do anything to stop this because, due to the nature of the practice, some boys end up showing slightly female characteristics and, in such a homophobic society, they are treated as homosexuals.
According to another report by the Digital Journal, Shir Mohamman was fourteen years old when he was violated by a powerful rich man. The boy got used to this lifestyle and remained with him until he turned 24, age in which he was too old to continue dancing. In order to stay under the protection of his boss, Shir Mohamman asked for his daughter's hand in marriage. They got married in 2007.
Lots of these children look forward to being like their bosses. They hope to someday have enough power and money to have boy dancers for themselves.
In Afghanistan, these pratices are perceived by many, as part of their culture. How tolerating can we be of such "cultural practices"? Where do we draw the line between cultural differences and the use of culture as a mere excuse for such horrible acts of violence?
