En 1979, el gobierno Chino impuso la regla de 1 hijo por familia para minimizar el crecimiento de la población nacional. Esta regla tenía pocas excepciones y en el caso de permitirle a una familia tener a otro bebé, esto tendría que pasar 5 años después de hacer tenido al primero.
Entre 1980 y 1990 el porcentaje de la población masculina aumentó drásticamente, mientras que el de la población femenina disminuyó de igual manera. La causa: se hicieron más accesibles las pruebas de ultrasonido para la población.
En el 2005, 26 años después de que se impuso esa estrategia de control de población, se comenzaron a hacer estudios acerca de los efectos que ésta ocasionó. Los resultados fueron devastadores:
1. Las familias comenzaron a abortar a sus bebés si sabían que eran niñas ya que, de acuerdo a la cultura, son los niños los que son considerados los más fuertes y quienes llevarán el apellido de la familia por más generaciones. Esto también llevó a un desbalance en las cuentas de la población ya que muchas familias que tenían niñas no las registraban y/o las abandonaban. Asimismo, hubieron muchos niñas desaparecidas, ya que las familias abortaban, mataban, o abandonaban a sus hijas y seguían intentando concebir a un niño.
2. El desbalance de sexos también ha creado problemas sociales y de conducta entre la vasta población masculina.
3. Hay muchos hombres solteros y sin esperanzas de formar una familia.
4. La escasez de mujeres ha creado un problema de secuestros y tráfico de mujeres, lo cual también ha hecho que se incremente el número de personas infectadas con VIH y otras ETS.
La solución?:
Se han comenzado campañas publicitarias promoviendo las ventajas de tener niñas.
Como publicista y ferviente creyente del efecto que esta puede causar en la población, afirmo no creer que esta medida sea suficiente para el daño que se causó por ya más de 3 décadas.
Pareciera que todavía vivimos en tiempo barbáricos. Cómo es posible que esta ley no haya cambiado y que la gente no se de cuenta del verdadero daño que se le está causando a la población? China avanza industrialmente, en un futuro no muy lejano se especula que podría llegar a convertirse en una potencia mundial; sin embargo, este es el ejemplo que nos brinda un país con tanto potencial...

In 1979, the Chinese government implemented a new law which stated a one-child-per-family rule. This law had few exceptions and those few cases in which a family was allowed to have more than one child, the next one would have to be born five years after the first.
Between 1980 and 1990, the Chinese male population increased drastically, while the female one decreased as dramatically. The cause: ultrasound testing was made more accesible for the entire population (families could therefore know in advance if they were having a girl or a boy)
In 2005, twenty-six years after this law was first proposed, researchers began investigating its long-term effects. The results were devastating:
1. Lots of women got abortions if they found out that their future first-born was a girl. This was mainly due to a cultural belief that males are stronger and more important in society because they carry the family's last name for future generations. Consequently, many families ended up abandoning their daughters or refusing to register them. In worse cases, girls mysteriously disappeared, or were found in trashcans, tossed out by families who kept getting rid of their baby girls in their attempt to have a male "first-born".
2. The gender unbalance created social and mental problems within the male population.
3. There are currently lots of single men with no hope of ever having a family of their own.
4. The scarcity of women has led to an increase in kidnapping, rape, women trafficking and an alarmingly high number of people infected with HIV and other STD's.
The solution?
An adveritisng campaign has begun which promotes the advantages of having female babies.
Despite the fact that I'm an advertiser and a firm believer in the power of advertising, I beg to differ with those who think this is a sufficiente measure to fix three decades of damages caused to the Chinese population.
Why does it sometimes feel like we live in ancient times? How it is possible that this law is still in place and that people don't see the real damage it's causing? Chine is growing industrially and is on its way to become a first world country; nevertheless, this is the example that their government gives to the world...
