Cuánto vale una vida? Respuesta: $200 USD (What's the Price of a Life? Answer: $200 US)

En Bundelkhand, India, la pobreza ha llegado a tal extremo que los granjeros venden a sus esposas para poder pagar sus deudas.

Según testimonios de la CNN, la esposa de un granjero dice haber sido vendida a un hombre rico por 30 días.  En estos 30 días las mujeres sufren una serie de abusos y viven practicamente en calidad de esclavas.  Desafortunadamente existe muy poca protección para aquellas mujeres que son los suficientemente valientes para ir a las autoridades a denunciar estos hechos. Al recobrar su "libertad", estas mujeres retractan sus denuncias ya que regresan a manos de sus esposos quienes serían los verdaderos culpables de venderlas.

Estas atrocidades no solo suceden con esposas, al parecer, según investigaciones, el tráfico de mujeres es bastante común en el área.  La esposa de otro granjero en una aldea cercana, testificó que a los 12 años fue vendida a por sus padres a su actual esposo. Su costo? $200 USD. La mujer señala que nunca acudió a pedir ayuda ya que dadas sus precarias condiciones, sumadas al analfabetismo y falta de educación (también prevalentes en la zona), no sabía a quien acudir.

Una vez más, en dónde está la ONU? Y las grandes potencias mundiales? Por qué estamos tan preocupados por armas nucleares, el fin del mundo, guerras a gran escala y tiranos que ya están muertos, cuando hay niñas que están siendo vendidas como objetos?

In Bundelkhand, India, poverty has gotten to such extreme levels that farmers sell their wives in order to pay their debts.

According to a testimony given by a farmer's wife to CNN news, this woman claims to have been sold to a rich man for thirty days.  In these thirty days, women suffer all kinds of abuses and praticallt become slaves.  Unfortunately, their is little protection given to the those few women who are brave enough to go to the authorities. According to investigations, at the moment in which they recover their freedom, these women take back their complaints, fearful that their husbands will be blamed for it.


Apparently these attrocities not only happen to farmer's wives, but the trafficking in women is common in the area. The wife of another farmer in a different village, testified that she was sold to a rich man  by her parents at the age of twelve. She claims to have been sold for $200 US and points out that she never went to get help because, as a result of her lack of education, she didn't know where to go. 


Once again, where is the UN in these critical sitiations? Why are we so tied up, worries about nuclear weapons, asteroids, the end of the world, wars and so-called Middle Eastern tyrans when in a plac enot so far away, girls are being sold and treated like objects? Isn't this more scary?
